Carroll County Public Schools has released the results of recent tests of the drinking water in schools. It has been brought to the school system’s attention that parents and community members may be experiencing difficulty accessing the report on individual school websites. Therefore, the school system has consolidated the results for each school into one report, which can now be found on the home page of the CCPS website.
A contract was approved in early fall 2016 to perform drinking water testing in all schools during November and December 2016. State and federal regulations require that only schools served by well water be tested. Schools that receive water from a public system are not required to be tested.
When asked about the testing program, Superintendent of Schools Stephen Guthrie explained that “Although state and federal regulations would have required the testing of only four schools, we felt that it was important to put the health and safety of our students and staff at the forefront and test the drinking water in all schools.”
Any drinking water fixture that was found to have elevated lead or copper levels was immediately taken out of service and scheduled for replacement. If the fixture was used for cleaning purposes, continued use was allowed. However, signs were posted in the area stating “Not for Drinking/Not for Potable Use.” Fixtures used for consumption were given priority for replacement. Following replacement, secondary samples will be taken to ensure that the problem has been corrected and meets EPA drinking water guidelines.
“We are pleased that our school system is committed to ensuring safe drinking water for all of our students and staff,” said Board President Devon Rothschild.
Carroll County Public Schools has provided all results to the Carroll County Health Department.
The plumbing fixtures in question, for Cranberry Station, have been replaced by maintenance.
