Middle School Mathematics

The Mathematics program in middle school extends and deepens students’ understanding of the content and processes of mathematics encountered in elementary school. The transition from concrete applications of math to abstraction of concepts used in higher level mathematics accelerates during the middle school years. The alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment facilitates student success in mathematics. The Maryland  College and Career Ready Standards, which includes the Standards for Mathematical Practice, is the foundation of all essential mathematics taught in Carroll County middle schools. Students make sense of what they are learning as it applies to their world. Technology is used appropriately to help students further develop mathematical concepts and reasoning.

Academic and Foundational Mathematics 6

The sixth grade academic mathematics program provides students with opportunities to develop and refine a strong foundation in mathematics to support future study.  Each aspect of the curriculum will improve conceptual understanding as students are provided with experiences to model and apply mathematical concepts and rules through real-world applications.  Equipped with a deeper understanding of number systems, students will explore advanced topics relating to decimals, fractions, and ratios.  In preparation for subsequent courses, students will also investigate and represent expressions, equations, and inequalities.  A study of geometry will include topics such as area, volume, and surface area using models and nets.  Ratios and rates are explored and applied to finding percent and measurement conversions.   Statistics will focus on concepts such as investigating statistical questioning, creating a variety of data displays, and analyzing measures of center and variability.  Throughout the curriculum, multiple representations are used to promote the visualization and quantitative reasoning integrated within the problem solving process.


Advanced Academic Mathematics 6

The 6th grade advanced academic mathematics program is a challenging course that prepares students for higher level mathematics.  The concepts taught emphasize procedural skills as well as a greater conceptual understanding.  Representation with models and applications to authentic real world situations are infused within the concepts.  The curriculum will provide increased rigor and depth into topics using rational numbers which includes integers, signed decimals, signed fractions and mixed numbers.  Equipped with a deeper understanding of rational numbers, students will represent and solve real-world problems using variable expressions, equations, and inequalities.  Students will also find the area, surface area, and volume of geometric figures and accurately represent them with models.   Ratios and rates are explored and applied to finding percent and measurement conversions.   A study of statistics will focus on concepts such as investigating statistical questions, creating a variety of data displays, and analyzing measures of center and variability.  


Foundational, Academic and Advanced Academic Mathematics 7

In 7th grade, students expand their understanding of rational numbers and operations with integers, signed fractions and signed decimals. Their understanding of rational numbers will be applied to proportional relationships, evaluating expressions and solving linear equations and inequalities. Students use graphing to determine proportionality. In geometry, students use the formulas for circumference and area of circles to solve real life problems. They also solve problems that involve area, volume, and surface area of two- and three- dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. A study of probability and statistics will include concepts such as random sampling, drawing inferences about a population, and making predictions. Concepts taught will emphasize procedural skill along with conceptual understanding in the context of real world problem solving.  Various forms of technology may be used as critical thinking skills are expanded to prepare students for future coursework.

Honors Mathematics 7:

Grade 8 Foundational, Academic and Advanced Academic


Students will examine real world problems as they formulate and reason with expressions and equations.  Applications will include modeling an association in bivariate data with linear equations and systems of linear equations.  In addition, students will analyze two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, congruence, and the Pythagorean Theorem.  Students will gain a deeper understanding of mathematical functions in preparation for Algebra I.
