World Languages

The Department of World Languages of Carroll County Public Schools will occupy a position of unique leadership among Maryland’s language programs as a teaching and learning community. CCPS students will be proficient communicators in world languages by demonstrating competency in communicative language skills.
The World Languages program offers courses in:
  • American Sign Language
  • French
  • German
  • Latin
  • Spanish
Students may enroll in language courses at sequential levels I-AP. The middle school offers Spanish I and in a few middle schools, French I is also offered. Based on educational research in foreign language learning and language acquisition, the World Languages program is focusing on a proficiency-based approach which stresses instruction that enables students to use language in real-life situations. The curriculum provides a framework for achieving proficiency, while allowing teachers to be flexible in planning and selecting strategies, resources and materials. The guide establishes the foundation for student success by integrating language functions, linguistic forms, and cultural context.
