North
Carroll High School was established in 1956 by
joining Hampstead and Manchester High Schools.
The school was originally located in Greenmount
at the current site of North Carroll Middle
School. The students chose red (scarlet) and
gray as the school colors, the panther as the
mascot and the alma mater was created by JoAnna
Saegusa, a member of the class of 1957.
Initially, 437 students and 20 faculty members
called North Carroll their school. The first
graduating class of 1957 had 79 members.
In
1962 an additional wing was added to the
facility. The school expanded and became a
Junior-Senior High School serving students in
grades 7-12.
In
1964, the senior class presented a Broadway
musical entitled, the Music Man. It was well
received by the school and community. Musicals
have been presented in most years since that
success.
During
the 1975-1976 school year, a new building was
completed just west in Hampstead on Maryland
route 482. On February 11, 1976, 860 students
and 45 staff members moved into the building.
The school became North Carroll High School
again.
Over
the years, red, white, and black became more
prominent color choices for the school uniforms.
In June 1980, the school colors were officially
established as red, white, and black by faculty
acclamation.
As
North Carroll high School has grown, more and
more extra curricular activities have been made
available for students. When the school first
opened, extra curricular were limited. Students
could choose between the Panther’s Tale (school
newspaper), Future Teachers of America, Student
Council, Future Farmers of America, Safety
Patrol, Movie Operators, Orchestra, Pianists,
Senior Chorus, Boy’s Soccer, Boy’s Basketball,
Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Track, Girl’s Speedball
and Cheerleading. The first Panther football
team began competing in 1969. The first
Homecoming was held on October 23-24, 1970.
Currently North Carroll High offers 55 extra
curricular activities for students to
participate in throughout the school year. North
Carroll High School’s extra curricular
activities have a rich history that continues to
grow each year.
As the
North Carroll Community continues to grow, so
does the population of North Carroll High
School.
A new
High school serving the North Carroll Community
is scheduled to open in 2009.
