Geographic Information Systems and Technology Program
Starting Next School Year at Westminster High School

Geographic Information Systems and Technology Program is moving from Francis Scott Key High School to Westminster High School next year.  This will allow all high school students the opportunity to pursue a career and certification in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) field.  Geographic Information Systems & Technology prepare students for GIS careers available in nearly all segments of the commercial, public, government and academic communities. GIS offers relevant and enriching hands-on real world application of content through current technology innovations. Career opportunities include; surveyors, cartographers, and surveying technicians. However, a certification in Geographic Information Systems can apply to many other careers and many other fields.  More information on GIS can be viewed at http://www.esri.com/what-is-gis.

This year’s 10th-graders will be eligible to enroll in Westminster’s regional Geographic Information Systems and Technology Program. The four-course program will be taken by students in their junior and senior years at Westminster High School.   Transportation to and from the home school will be provided on the Career and Technology Center busses.

This completer program’s course sequence includes Foundations of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Spatial Technology and Remote Sensing (STARS) course one and two, STARS course three and four, and culminates with a student-designed GIS project in the capstone course. During the program, the students will complete a portfolio assignment that is sent off to be reviewed by instructors at NASA for an entry level Geographic Information System certification.

The student-designed project can be tailored to a student’s specific interest in the GIS field. The school is partnering with the Carroll County Office of Public Safety, Department of Natural Resources, and local municipalities and agencies to give the students the opportunity to gain experience using GIS with real world projects.

For more information and to complete an application talk with your school counselor by calling 410-751-3636.  Space is limited in this program.  The applications are due to your school counselor by January 19, 2016.  The submitted applications will be reviewed and acceptance letters will be sent out during the first part of February.
